Spam Musubi

Updated: Apr 6, 2019

A very popular hawaiian snack or lunch that can be eaten on the go, if you do not have time to sit and eat.

Spam Musubi is a creative way to bring a small plate lunch which fits in your pocket. It is composed of teriyaki flavored slice of canned meat ("SPAM" brand) and rice, wrapped in "nori" (dried sheet of seaweed). This particular snack was invented by a Japanese lady from Hawaii with the intention of raising money to help pay the bills. It then caught on like fire and spread through out the islands. Today, it is sold at gas stations, diners and food trucks where they serve hawaiian plate lunches.

Just a quick of history of Spam. It was introduced as long lasting meat to feed people in the late 30’s and early 40’s, SPAM was basically a survival food in a can, just like the MRE (Military Ready to Eat) food rations for the american soldiers during the WWII. I guess, known in Hawaii as one of the least expensive form of meat, some jokingly call it "hawaiian steak in a can." Only the guy that invented it for HORMEL, really know what it "SPAM" stands for. But, nonetheless, it is still a special treat that gives the State of Hawaii the title for being the "Highest consumption of Spam per capita in the World." So, for this particular snack we will use of the SPAM brand, otherwise it is not "spam musubi"

Spam musubi can be prepared in many ways, but the one I like the best is in this quick and easy recipe.

So, try it in your kitchen to satisfy your hunger. Enjoy!

Amount of ingredients depends on how many musubi you wanna eat, Enjoy!

1. In a hot skillet or pan, add a little oil

2. Fry the sliced Spam until brown on both sides and set aside

3. In an oiled non stick pan, saute the garlic and ginger

4. Add the soy mixture (soy sauce, cooking wine and sugar)

5. Reduce to a slightly thick sauce

6. Add a little sesame seeds and turn off heat

7. Place the Cooked Spam and coat on both sides and set aside

8. On a cutting board, if using a double spam mold, place the Nori shiny side down.

9. Place the Mold near the center of the Nori

10. Scoop a couple of table spoon of cooked rice and press hard to mold the rice

11. Add the coated Spam slices and add another Scoop of rice and press

12. While pressing, lift the mold and then remove the press

13. Fold over one side of the Nori and Wet slightly the other side and fold over.

14. Turn the musubi over to keep the Nori from falling apart.

15. Cut in half or smaller pieces for a One bite finger food.

16. Plate and Eat.

If you want to eat for later, wrap with plastic wrap and put in pocket, good for lunch boxes, beach, hiking, and movie theaters...good anytime anywhere!
